Week 1 Recap
By: Scoop Monty
The season started with two complete games day 1.  One by the Inferno's Mark Buehrle and the other by the Wreck's Roy Halliday.  Offensive stars on day 1 include Albert Puljos with his 4 rbi's and three hits.  Nimrods had a great franchise opening game as they one in ten innings as Justin Spier uncorked a two wild pitches to 2B Johnson in the first four pitches and the Nimrods had a 2-1 win thanks to Johnson's game tieing triple in the 8th.
The Infernos kept their winning ways on day 2 with a HR with his killer P's Jorge Posada and Johnny Peralta.  Posada on the first pitch and peralta with to strikes on him.  Day 3 was more infernos with 3 runs in the 8th and 9th It started with a lead off HR by Mark Teixeria but the rest of the runs without the long ball and Posada and Peralta were again in the mix.  Pinto lasting only 10 pitches and Trevor Hoffman just added to the fire.
After 2 innings it was 11-0 chips then by the 5th it was 11-10 Chips over nimrods.  Then came the donuts all the way until the bottom of the 9th.  The nimrods Eniar Diaz was hit by a pitch.  Owens pinch runs and steals second on the first pitch. Then with two outs Guzman pinch hits for Reyes and he took the 1-0 pitch right back up the box to tie the game at 11. In the 13th the chips had a bid to win it and Kousmanoff was thrown out at home on a Speier ground ball to 2b Then in the bottom of the 15th.
Kouzmanoff committed an error to allow ortiz to reach.  Then after an IW a Sac bunt and another IW.  Bartolo Colon walks in Iwamura on 5 pitches for the loss.
Jake Westbrook and John Smoltz locked up in a beauty as they both pitched 9 shut out innings.  Chase Utley made an error in the 14th, and despite pinch hitter Conor Jackson not getting a man in with the bases loaded and one out Adrian Beltre picked him out with a 2 out hit.
In the Second Series the Coyotes picked themselves up and won their first game by scoring two in the ninth.  With Saito pitching Chipper Jones walked on 4 pitches with one out.  Then with 2 outs Abury Huff and Hopper singled, and manager Mark Clark had seen enough and put in Matt Capps but Cano got a single and the game was over.  For the 4th game in a row the infernos win in dramatic fashion.   Posada got it started with a single Jeff Kent threw a ball away so that Peralta could tie it up with yet another single and Coste's sac fly brought the win home for the Infernos who are on fire.
The Blaze sent the Warpigs to a 0-4 start thanks to Manny Ramirez single and a sac bunt.  Then Kenny Lofton's single did not get him home but his speed forced a throwing error on a pickoff attempt and the Blaze get game one of the series.
The Angles had a great comeback game #4 with 2 in the ninth, thanks in part to a double steal by Luis Castillo and newly inserted pinch runner Kenny Lofton.  Mark DeRosa tied it down to his last strike.  But it was not to be as Navarro doubled home Troy Tulowitzki after an intentional walk to Travis Hafner
Game 5 had the chips winning in extra innings and they needed both runs in the 11th Burress of the Horned Frogs pitched around Jim Thome walking him on 4 pitches but Wilson hit a sac fly and the chips survived the bottom half of the inning despite a Geoff Jenkins homer off of Sosa.

Well the as usual the full time pitcher market is small and mostly untalented.  So lets take a look at what is out there to draft.  Dustin McGowen had the most innings pitched last year for an undrafted player.  He ends up being one of the best pitchers in the draft this year.   The K's are 8 per game and HR's are around 1 per 11 innings and his R/9 is a best 11.1.  Edwin Jackson is the youngest FA Full Time Pitcher and Micah Owings is the best hitter of the bunch.
The catcher market is possibly the worst it has ever been.  Carlos Ruiz represents the only full time catcher and amazingly
There are only 2 other catchers with more than 200 Plate apperences.  One of those two, Ryan Doumit is barely a catcher with 5 passed balls and 2 Errors in 28 games at catcher.  Second and Thrid base have a handful of full time players and as usual First base and outfield has something for everyone.

 Pitching In.

Last years draft left the free agent list free of full time starters.  Which has left most all teams with a good amount of pitching.  Lets look at some of the teams different pitching situations as we quickly approaching the cut down date.
The Blaze are at the bottom with an ERA 4.81 That along with a second place finish will make it an uphill battle to get this team back to the top of the division.  The good news is, despite having the least amount of innings, they do have three full time starter the bad news is the three are Moyer, Fogg and Woodie Williams
Next from the bottom is the newly owned, and named Roosters.  This was a rebuilding project from the start of last years draft.  So the game plan was to reconstruct the pitching staff from the begining.  The quantitly did not translate into quality however.
The 1st round pick Josh Johnson was injured during the draft then had a set back and only received a few innings.  The fifth round pick Angel Guzman was odd man out of the Cubs rotation.  6th round pick Kei Igawa, who was supposed to be a poor man's Mastsuzaka, turned out to be rich man's mistake.   Jason Marquis was the second worst full time starter last year went in the 8th round but had a spot in the Cubs rotation and turns out is the only pitcher worth keeping so far.  Jeff Weaver the worst full time starter last year.
He was drafted in the 13th round and kept up his streak of being awful.  The last pitcher was Sean Marshall who put up decent numbers al beit for only 100 innings.   Hold overs Robertson and Wandy Rodriguez has this team on the uptick dispite the some of the bad luck drafting and other holdovers Ohka, Leiber and McCarthy did poorly.
The Keglers look to have the most impressive pitching their Team ERA is 2nd but they have 50 more innings than the first place Stewies.
The Hitmen are much inproved despite only getting 20 innings from Pedro Martinez.  They have a lot of starting pitching to draft but Doug Davis Harang and Smoltz are a nice start.

Swisher-roo another victo-roo

The Stewies and Vazquez would have their hands full for The Coyotes called on big game pitcher Curt Schilling for game one.

The game's drama was in the bottom of the third inning when despite a double play that shilling hit into an intentional walk to leadoff hitter Cano turned in to

four runs as LoDuca and Hafter followed up with a single and HR respectively.  The Stewies Chipped away at the lead getting the score to 4-3, but Alex Rios's bases

clearing double in the 7th iced the game for good.  Coyotes 7 Stewies 4.

For game 2 Kevin Rodgers, who was pitching in the majors before his opposing pitcher, Scott Kazmir was even conceived got the nod.  A-Rod started off the scoring and gave the Stewies a 1-0 lead in the second with the a long ball.  Travis Hafner tied the game up in the third with a home run of his own and his second in as many games.  In the sixth the coyotes took the lead for good with a Chipper Jones homer.  Garrett Anderson came off the bench to ice the game in the 8th with a 2 run double.  Coyotes 4 Stewies 1

In a major pressure situation another youngster Jered Weaver was called for game three for the Stewies against another young starter Nelson Liriano.  Things did not start so well as Swisher hit a 1-1 pitch for a two run homer and after 3 innings complete, the Coyotes were threatening to go up 3-0 in the series.  The Stewies got one run back in the fourth thanks to and A-rod Single and then in the sixth Rocco Baldelli hit an 0-2 pitch for a triple and then Randy Winn hit the next pitch for a home run and the Stewies had their first lead in the series.  In the bottom of the sixth the Stewies got the first 3 men on base one via an infield single which many times is a bad omen the computer must have sensed the pitcher was tiring and Villarreal came in to face the 4th hitter Jeff Kent.  Kent battled but struck out on the eight pitch of the at bat.  Bengie Molina then proceeded to hit into a double play and the momentum switched back the Coyotes way.  The Coyotes capitalized on the momentum shift and proceed to score three runs all after two outs.  Coyotes 5 Stewies 3

Dan Haren was the Stewies final hope to shut down the Coyotes going up against another Coyotes veteran in Hudson .  After 4 shut out innings the Coyotes again struck first and Nick Swisher was the culprit hitting a 1-2 pitch that scored Alex Rios.  Then with 8 outs left for the Stewies A-Rod homers and the Stewies take a 2-1 lead.  Kent and Molina hit back to back doubles for a 3-1 cushion, which they needed as Travis Hafner hit his third home run of the series.  Stewies 3- Coyotes 2

Game five was a rematch of game one but this game would have a much different.  Curt Schilling was out after 4 outs and 4 runs allowed and Vazquez lasted 8 innings without allowing a run.  Stewies 7 – Coyotes 0

Game six was also a rematch.  A rematch of Game 2 and again the game went a different way with the stewies taking an early lead by scoring 3 runs on the first 13 pitches.  The rain started pouring down before pitch 14 and so did the Stewies momentum.  The 4th inning was the beginning of the end for the Stewies as the marry-go-round started for the coyotes and the only outs they were making were of the sacrifice variety.  When the dust settled the coyotes had the lead 4-3.  Travis Haftner added another run in the 5th.  The Stewies continued to fight and got back within a run in the 7th as pitcher ray through a ball into the crowed on a slow ground by A-rod.  Then with three outs left Matsui pinch hit a single and Graffanino hit into a controversial sacrificed him to second.  Holliday came through with a double and tied the game.  But you don’t play for a tie on the road, and with two outs in the ninth Nick Swisher came up with two on and hit a 2-2 pitch of of Scott Procter into the seats and the Coyotes went on to win their Second World Championship.  Coyotes 8 – Stewies 5
