2008 Charleston Chiefs
OFFENSE OBP .345 12th Well Ivan Rodriguez has real trouble taking a walk
which has his obp under .300. Adrian Gonzalez will probably get most of the
playing time at 1b. His 30 HR's and .350 obp is decent. Jeff Kent is had another
solid year hitting around .300 and having a 1/1 ratio of walks/k's. 2005's
number one pick overall David Wright is paying dividends hitting .300/.400/.550.
Jose Reyes too has a 1/1 ratio of walks/k's and his .360 obp is decent as well.
Adam Dunn picked 4th overall in 2002 draft has of course the problem of striking
out over 150 times a season but lighting does strike once in a while as he has 69
extra bases. Grady Sizemore is an elite CF and makes up for Andrew Jones'
poor year.
RATING 6.5
STARTING PITCHING ERA 3.88 8th 2007's 6th round pick Tim Lincecum had a nice
rookie year keeping the obp against him near .300 and more than one strike out per inning. Dustin McGowan This year's 3 pick over all was a nice
addition with his runners per nine at 11.1. Long time Chief CC Sabathia had
an outstanding year pitching 241 innings and keeping his r/9 at 10.6. The
top three are solid but 4 and 5 are going to be a bit dicey as their other Giants
pitching prospect picked in round 3 of 2005, Noah Loery has a r/9 rating of 14.3.
RATING 6.5
RELIEF PITCHING Rafael Betancourt had a great season his 80ip are
basically lights
out. His r/9 is a
minuscule 6.8. Add to that 1k/ip and 1HR/20ip and
you could say that this is one of the best seasons a reliever ever had. Doug
Brocail's 70ip are great to with a r/9 under 11. Ryan Franklin also has 81
runners in 80 innings. Matt Hurges and Bobby Seay keep the run of great relievers
.RATING 9.5
CATCHINGIROD is a premier name in catching but not a
premier catcher. His
Ex Rating and .280 batting average is great, but it ends there, and Saltalamacchia
is worse in every way. Also no third catcher
RATING 3.5
DEFENSE Fld% .985 7th IROD is one of three full time catchers with a Ex arm.
1B should be covered well with Gonzalez's Vg range. Kent is awful in every
way defensively. The corner OF looks bad no matter who they pick to put in the lineup
but center field looks to be decent with either Sizemore or Jones.
RATING 5
MANAGMENT Matt and Reed have always been in contention but have never been able
to keep their team cashing consistently. Reed's love for the Giants and Apple
computers may have gotten in the way of picking the best player. RATING 5.5
